Hay fever is the pits! Runny or blocked nose, dry, itchy eyes, drooling all over your pillow because you can't breathe properly, sleep disturbances. Unfortunately for 1 in 5 Australians (nearly 4.5 MILLION people), Spring is no fun at all and every year tissue and antihistamine sales soar, sleep is broken and desperation kicks in. Oh, to be able to breathe clearly!
So, what's going on?
In layman's terms, hay fever is a localised allergic reaction to things like pollen, dust mites, animal hair + mould. Your body responds to this perceived threat by releasing specific antibodies in the nose lining (nasal mucosa), which then becomes inflamed... sounds fun, NOT!
Usual care with drugs.
For most people, it's a trip to the chemist for some nasal spray or antihistamines (and tissues). In the short term (like 1 or 2 days), nasal sprays can offer relief, but for long term use, they can cause rebound nasal congestion, which kind of defeats the purpose... using a nasal spray to clear your nose but it causes your nose to become even more blocked... hmmm. No thanks!
Antihistamine use is not without problems either. Side effects include, dry mouth and throat, constipation, drowsiness, blurred vision and urinary retention. Long term use is definitely not recommended, as it can cause liver damage.
How acupuncture works.
In a nutshell, acupuncture mediates the inflammation that occurs with hay fever, and decreased inflammation means you can breathe again!
Enjoy Spring this year, there's no need to suffer any longer!
